Located in Eastern North Carolina on the coast, and we always seem to have weather related issues occur. Also, we have two different fungicide applications also. If your wheat got off to a good start and the fertility is there. I have a couple of neighbors (one answered you ) routinely raise 100+ bu. I'm convinced that split n and timing is the key. If you want 100+ it gets pretty expensive. We raise white wheat and it's pretty finicky. What kind of yield are you looking for? We put down about 25# of n on at planting but p and k are more important at planting. SRWW dominates around here so protein isn't critical to the economics of wheat. Split applications of N, seem to be more popular the farther north a guy goes, I think because hard red winter wheat, and spring wheat is more common and guys are looking to bump protein levels. NOTE weather always seems to be the limiting yield factor, March ice,a late spring frost or a rain at the right/wrong time seems to make or break the wheat crop around here. Should produce 85-110 bu wheat quite easily IF weather co-operates. A single fungicide application at 75% heading follows to control fusarium and disease on the flag leaf. then a single application or either urea or UAN, typically 90-110lbs actual N, in late April/ early May. Southern Ontario, most guys plant in fall, probably a 50/50 split between those that add MAP at planting and those that don't,if your fertility is good you shouldn't need the MAP IMHO. You don't give a location so take this for what its worth. I did not see anything visible in the fields during green up and growth stages. I haven't noticed any issue with spread pattern but I also can't say I have observed that closely. Stream on 40 gal of 28% and 4 gal of thiosal after green up, usually mid-late April but sometimes early may here in central Michigan. Plus 50# map and 200# pot ash broadcast at planting. I have applied them separate and mixed together but it seems that when I apply them together, I don't get as even of a spread as I would like. I put a little on at planting as DAP, some on in February and the rest in March. Split application along with intensively managing disease has put us around 90 BPA average or more most years. Usually run 100 lbs of Urea & 100 lbs of AMS in late February right before coming out of dormancy and then put on 22-24 Gallons of UAN around a month later. Trying to gain some knowledge on how others go about this process. How do you guys devise your nitrogen plan for winter wheat? Fall preplant, Winter Rescue (if needed ), Spring Aplication.?
